Last week, we got the official casting for Marvel’s Defender, Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist, which has generated a huge discussion on multiple levels. As we wait for the series to start production, we are now starting to hear about who else Iron Fist is adding to its cast. According to That Hashtag Show (which also broke the scoop that Finn Jones was being eyed for Iron Fist), Marvel has begun casting for the comic book character Shang-Chi and will be auditioning exclusively Asian actors.

Shang-Chi is the son of Marvel super villain Fu Manchu. Raised to be an assassin from an early age, Shang-Chi soon discovered his father’s evil side and faked his death shortly after his first assignment. He used his father’s training against him and attacked multiple elements of his criminal empire.  His team-ups include Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Angela Del Toro, a.k.a. White Tiger.

It is worth noting that Angela Del Toro was mentioned by name in Jessica Jones season one.  While an off-handed remark and a possible Easter Egg, Marvel is known to never do things accidentally. This group, along with Daredevil was responsible for trying to bring the Punisher to legal justice. Comics wise this led to a team up with Black Widow. If that’s one of the storylines that’s a potential plot arc for The Defenders could we finally see the world of Marvel Television and Film align in a major fashion by bringing an Avenger into the fold? Only time will tell.

Shang-Chi, called the Master of Kung Fu, possesses intense control and is able to manage his nerve receptors so that he’s resistant to poisons as well as pain.  He is also an expert in espionage, and of course Martial arts.

It’s worth noting that this report also included information that Iron Fist’s production is scheduled to begin in April and that depending on Shang-Chi’s reception, there could eventually be talk of a spin-off. No current schedule has been announced for Marvel TV’s other Netflix shows which includes Luke Cage, Jessica Jones Season 2and Iron Fist himself.

“Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”
