Disney Infinity Cancelled

It’s a sad day in the Marvel and Disney gaming world.

Disney reported today in an earnings statement that the company is ending its self published console games business. That means no more Disney Interactive and most surprisingly and disheartening, no more Disney Infinity. The toy-to-life console game, launched in 2013, enjoyed success mostly among families and collectors seeking out the beautiful figures of Disney characters players brought to life within the game. In the last few years Disney Infinity saw the inclusion of Marvel properties with characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe popping up in expansion packs and updates.

Avalanche, the in-house developer that produced the game, will also be shuttered and the talented artists that worked on the project will be laid off. It never gets any easier to see something like this happen to such a creative team. Our hearts go out to the staff at Avalanche.

From Disney Infinity :

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

This news comes on the heels of Disney previously reporting that there would be no new editions of Infinity this year, something they had done for the last three years straight. Not everything Disney Infinity related has been completely cancelled, as the already planned Alice Through The Looking Glass and Finding Dory updates will be released this summer.

If you’ve been putting off collecting Disney Infinity figures, now’s the time to start snapping them up where you can find them before the prices become outrageous.
