Marvel’s focus on diversity and inclusion has rightfully turned to increasing the presence of black superheroes on television. The show has made a number of strides with Kamil McFadden’s Patriot, but Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron focuses on Riri Williams played by Sofia Wylie. The Andi Mack actress is no stranger to shows that push boundaries, and Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron showcases her talents.
Riri Williams is a recently introduced comic book character. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and currently written by Eve Ewing, Riri is a tech genius born and raised in Chicago. While at MIT, she builds a replica of Iron Man’s armor and starts fighting crime to honor the memory of her stepfather who died in a car accident, determined to be a hero. The Marvel Rising Special, Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron does an excellent job of adapting this. The reason? Sofia Wylie’s excellent voiceover skills and the heart she brings to the character.
She does much more than work with Iron, however. The actress is also an accomplished singer who wrote the song “Side by Side” for Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron. Characters like Riri Williams and actresses like Sofia Wylie are breaking new ground within the industry. Tackling a complicated character like Riri could be a challenge. Sofia sat down with The Marvel Report to discuss just what it took to bring Riri to life, what she’d like to see when it comes to Riri Williams in terms of toys, and where she’d like Riri to go.
