WonderCon: Marvel Rising Interview – Milana Vayntrub (Squirrel Girl)

Marvel Television is continuing to push boundaries in its animation department. Everyone in the new special Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron had a chance to shine, and its cast and crew clearly worked well together. Marvel Rising is making an effort to keep it in the family as well. While the TV shows may be loosely connected to the movies, the animated universe keeps it connected behind the camera. Agents of SHIELD’s Chloe Bennet reprises her role as the voice of Daisy Johnson, and Milana Vayntrub, who was cast as the live-action Squirrel Girl in 2017, voices Squirrel Girl.

Milana Vayntrub’s New Warriors is still in limbo waiting for filming, but the actress was more than happy to sit down with reporters at WonderCon 2019 to share her thoughts on the series and her character’s potential.

What’s most striking about Vayntrub is her sense of fun. She truly embodies who Squirrel Girl is: an irreverent and silly character who ultimately is the best hero that she can be. Squirrel Girl is consistently far truer to herself then a number of others in the Marvel Universe — from comics to onscreen incarnations.

The best part was when Vayntrub was asked about if she had any of her characters’ toys. The Marvel Rising dolls are equal parts Barbie and action figure. For parents of children, young preteens or those young at heart, they’re a great buy for someone who wants to represent one of their favorite characters. Vayntrub shared that she owns a Squirrel Girl and also bought one for her niece. “I kept Tippy Toe, though,” she shared. “Because I wanted Doreen to have her own army of squirrels.”

We sat down and discussed the toys, Squirrel Girl’s motivations, where she fits into the Marvel Rising universe, who she is to Riri Williams and where she might go both live-action and otherwise. Check out our full interview in the video below!
