Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 9.
Marvel fans know the drill: You NEVER leave the end of a Marvel film before the credits finish rolling. The WandaVision finale was no different, providing a mid-credits scene and post-credits scene for viewers.
Both scenes offer important clues into the future of the MCU and ensure we’ll be seeing a lot more of Monica Rambeau and Wanda Maximoff.
Let’s break down both scenes and what they mean for the future of the MCU.
Mid-Credits Scene: Monica Rambeau Meets a New Ally
After the final showdown between Agatha and Wanda, there’s still plenty of clean-up left to do in Westview. In the mid-credits scene, we see Jimmy Wu coordinating efforts to make sure the scene of the accident is processed and the townspeople are okay. We also see that Hayward has been arrested for his crimes.
Monica Rambeau is approached by a nameless FBI agent who tells her they’re asking for her in the theater. Inside the theater, the agent reveals they are actually a Skrull sent by “an old friend of her mother’s” AKA Nick Fury. She tells her he wants to meet with Monica. When Monica asks, “where?” the Skrull just points up. Monica breaks out into a smile.
The post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home showed Fury hanging out in space. Clearly, whatever he’s working on he wants help from Monica.
It’s already been confirmed Monica will appear in Captain Marvel 2, set to premiere on November 11, 2022. Based on this scene, it seems likely she will also play a role in the upcoming Secret Invasion show starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
Secret Invasion will adapt the classic Marvel Comics storyline about shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.
Even without powers, Monica Rambeau proved she is a hero. Now she’s poised to play a big role in the next phase of the MCU as her superhero alter-ego Spectrum.
Since the premiere date for Secret Invasion hasn’t been released it’s unclear which project will premiere first. However, given this new connection between Monica Rambeau and Nick Fury, it seems very likely whichever comes first will feature a meeting between the two and lead into the other project.
But before we move on to the post-credits scene, that’s not the only thing that’s teased in the mid-credits scene. As Monica is walking inside the theater, the marquee says “Tannhauser Gate.”
This Easter Egg is a reference to the iconic sci-fi film Blade Runner. It’s a little on the nose considering the conversation Vision and “White Vision” have about what makes a person real and whether they can be replicated. Maybe it’s just an Easter Egg, but maybe it’s also a clue that the MCU isn’t done with Vision yet.
Post-Credits Scene: Scarlet Witch Embraces Her Strange
The post-credits scene finds Wanda Maximoff adopting a full cottage-core aesthetic as she isolates in the mountains. However, a tracking camera shot through the cabin reveals Wanda has learned how to astral project. She uses this power to study the Darkhold while also vibing in sweatpants on the earthly plane.
At the very end of the scene, Wanda’s astral projection hears Billy and Tommy’s cries for help.
So what does this all mean?
Wanda’s next confirmed appearance in the MCU is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2022. (Kevin Feige stated multiple times that WandaVision would be setting up that film).
If Wanda’s children are trapped somewhere, she’ll want to find them. So she may turn to the only other powerful magic user she knows, Doctor Strange, for help.
Not many details have been released about the film yet, so any ideas about who the villain could be are pure speculation. But given that the film will lean towards the horror genre, Doctor Strange’s frequent foe Nightmare is one guess. Another option is Mephisto (yes, that guy), given the connection to Billy and Tommy.
The scene also seems to confirm that we’ll be seeing Billy and Tommy again. In the comics, the two are aged up when they reappear after their initial deaths.
If we do end up with older versions of the characters, that is another signal that the MCU plans to set up a show or film starring the Young Avengers (which features members such as Kate Bishop, America Chavez, and Patriot — all of whom are slated to appear in upcoming projects).
