Despite garnering negative buzz thanks to extremely mixed reviews, Eternals won the U.S. weekend box office bringing in $71 million. (You can read our review of the film here.)
Its global box office opening totaled $161.7 million.
Eternals box office for its opening weekend marks the fourth-best US release of 2021. It trails three other Marvel films: Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Venom: Let There by Carnage.
It exceeded the opening weekend total of the latest blockbuster to hit theaters, Dune, which also had a day and date streaming release on HBO Max.
Marvel Studios still has one film left to premiere this year, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is co-produced with Sony. It’s anticipated this film will exceed Eternals at the box office.
